Evaluated exercise programs for 71 patients (mean age 64.79 yrs) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by randomly assigning Ss to 1 of 5 groups: behavior modification, cognitive-behavior modification, cognitive modification, attention control, or no-treatment control. In the 1st 4 groups, Ss participated in 6 sessions designed to increase their adherence to an exercise prescription; Ss in the no-treatment group were given an exercise prescription but did not receive training on how to implement it. Results show that over the 3 mo of the program the 1st 3 groups showed significant increases in exercise, exercise tolerance, health status, and self-efficacy in comparison to the last 2 groups (control). The cognitive-behavior modification group walked significantly more than any other group.(53 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
