Hamamura et al.'' have ascertained that the feeding mechanism of the silkworm, Bombyx more, depends on three factors, namely, attractant, biting factor, and swallowing factor. The attractant is a volatile alcoholic substance, and the swallowing factor is cellulose. The biting factor consists of ,9-sitosterol and isoquercitrin, which is the principal component of flavonoids found in mulberry leaves.2,,3, They4> also found that morin, a flavonoid contained in mulberry tree but not in its leaves, could replace isoquercitrin as the biting factor. On the basis of these findings, they thought that a synthetic diet should contain these factors in order to secure good appetite of the larvae.
