We have speculated that calcium-oxalate nephrolithiasis results from a combination of two distinct processes - tubular cell dysfunction and calcium/oxalate hyper-excretion. To test this hypothesis, we investigated whether oxalate overload by itself would give rise to cellular derangements by assessing cellular and mitochondrial function in an animal model of nephrolithiasis characterized by profound hyperoxaluria.
