Capsizing experiments were carried out for a model of a container ship and a purse seiner running in regular and irregular astern seas. Dangerous situations in ship speed and heading angle of ship to waves were experimentally and analytically investigated for the phenomena which are the so-called harmonic and parametric resonance, pure loss of stability, surf-riding and broaching-to. An analytical approach was attempted to investigate profoundly the dynamics of ship motions and capsizing in severe astern seas. The results of the analytical approach by making use of computer program were in good agreement with experiments.
