Provenance analysis has significantly changed over the past decade, with new tools drastically expanding the scope of sedimentary geology. Single grain detrital geochronology (U/Pb, Ar/Ar) and whole rock geochemical and isotopic analyses combine with more traditional sedimentologic techniques to provide an unprecedented insight into the origin and development of sedimentary successions. Data are being produced at a remarkable rate, and techniques are evolving rapidly as the utility of provenance analysis is recognized in a wide variety of basinal settings. A symposium highlighting recent advances in isotopic provenance analysis at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Seattle in November 2003 inspired compilation of a series of papers focused on various applications and techniques in provenance analysis. In this volume, papers are organized by Methods and Analysis, and are so introduced in this Foreward.
