Primary biliary cirrhosis is worldwide in its distribution with a low prevalence of 3.7 14 cases per 100,000 population. The disease is rarely diagnosed in the tropics. The incidence and prevalence is not known but if a thorough search is made for the diagnosis of hepatitis B Surface Antigen negative cirrhosis the diagnosis of this condition would probably increase.
