If the collaborative nature of most media production complicates issues of authorship, this chapter argues that the frames that augment our experiences of engaging with media products might also take on an authorial function. The television channel sits at the intersection between the broadcaster and the program, often acting as a site through which conflicts in ownership and authority are enacted. In order to highlight some of the varied ways in which the television channel has enacted its authorial function, the chapter draws on examples from across the history of television and from the US and the UK. It demonstrates the central, but also historically and geographically contingent, role that the television channel has played in authoring our experiences of television viewing. The tension between local station and national network names also highlights the relationship between the construction of an identity for a television channel and its authorial function.
