At over 500 pages, Qualitative Research: An Introduction to Methods and Design is long and the title, while accurate, is not particularly engaging. In fact, the book’s size and its title clearly suggest a textbook that students will use to learn about qualitative research as they commence their research journeys. However, we maintain that this is a fascinating text. While clearly introductory, the text names and addresses complexities that accompany becoming a qualitative researcher in thoughtful and powerful ways. The book adopts a didactic format. The editors describe the aim of the text as offering an, ‘up-to-date guide to qualitative research design, data collection, analysis, and reporting written by articulate and accessible scholars’ (p. 11). Reflection questions are interspersed throughout the book and boxes containing helpful lists and figures are presented to support readers. Previews and summaries as well as clear headings and generous white space add to the accessibility of the text. Each chapter includes features that will be useful to both novice and experienced researchers. These features include an opening list of key ideas, multiple sets of reflection questions distributed throughout each chapter, a chapter summary, an index of key terms, suggested reading, and a complementary list of relevant organizations and websites. However, it is the degree to which the book names and addresses complexities related to qualitative research that intrigues the authors of this review. While many discussions of qualitative research dedicate time and attention to what qualitative research is not – qualitative researchers do not claim to be objective, do not focus on measurable phenomena, do not aspire toward a verifiable truth – the editors of this book have compiled a remarkable set of chapters that explore what qualitative research is and what it does do. We discover the nuances and variations that contribute to the power and the significance of qualitative work. Admittedly, this is a long journey as the reader encounters chapter after chapter, methodology after methodology, and a vast range of methods and potential data sources. The reader understands that qualitative research is biography, ethnography, case study, narrative inquiry, and much more. Intriguing complexities introduced in the first chapter include the distinction between methods and methodologies and a thoughtful yet brief review of the history of qualitative research. The organization of the book reveals a deep understanding of various methodologies and the relationships among them. The first four
