Display, courting and mating behavior of a synchronously flashing firefly, the Malaysian species P. tener, were analyzed by low light level video. Males flash synchronously with other males under a variety of conditions. The courting male perches on the back of the female and holds his abdomen so as to discharge the lantern directly into her eyes. Characteristic flash exchanges occur before copulation. The significance of these behaviors is discussed in relation to theories of the evolution and adaptive significance of synchronous flashing.
