The aim of this article is to present some of our reflections before the beginning and during the research project “Commodity Populations: Immigration and Trafficking of Women and Girls in Spain,” financed by the Instituto de la Mujer (2007-2010) (I+D Research Projects, RE 04/2006). The initial objective was to approach a phenomenon whose relevance and seriousness were not commensurate with their lack of penal consequences and their acknowledgement as a social problem. Later, new regulations and rules of intervention have appeared in the fight against trafficking in Spain. Those of us participating in this project have followed the different objectives in developing the line of approach to this phenomenon through diverse activities, with the challenges involved in the field of academic research in Spain. The following sections are devoted to considering some theoretical and methodological reflections that broaden and give nuance to the approach of the initial project, specifically regarding sexual trafficking. First, we shall reflect on the social construction of sexual trafficking as a modern, contemporary social problem. This consideration is a result of our research and will introduce later reflections on the theoretical and methodological frameworks from which this line of research originated, which is still in force and undergoing a process of reflection: a) the theoretical contribution of the Human Rights approach in a Gender Perspective, and b) the technical contribution based on the multi-strategic use of quantitative and qualitative research methods, in an effort to seek alternatives for information and analysis that fit, throughout the process, the necessary ethical criteria for work with sensitive information and informants in vulnerable situations.
