MethodsWe analyzed data from participants enrolled in the COPDGene (Genetic Epidemiology of COPD) cohort; the details of the study have been published previously (8). Briefly, the cohort included current and former smokers with and without COPD. Subjects underwent spirometry according to the American Thoracic Society guidelines (9). Computed tomography (CT) scans were acquired at full inspiration and end exhalation. The presence of ECAC was defined by a≥ 50% reduction of the cross-sectional area of the trachea and/or bronchus intermedius (4). Data on use of long-acting β-agonists (LABAs), long-acting antimuscarinics (LAMAs), and ICSs were obtained at enrollment as reported by participants and, when available, by inspecting their medications.
