The behavior of bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, is closely tied to local ecology, and behavior patterns change according to ecological factors such as prey distribution and tidal regime. Although no single comprehensive study of bottlenose dolphin behavior and ecology has been conducted, many studies have contributed insights into the relationship between behavior and ecology in this species.Feeding is the activity most often associated with particular temporal and ecological conditions. Dolphins in South Africa (Tayler and Saayman, 1972; Saayman et al., 1973) and Texas (Shane, 1977; Shane et al., 1986) fed most in the early morning and late afternoon, possibly in response to the diurnal patterns of prey.
