Ethanol has a multiplicity of actions in the body affecting a variety of organs. In this brief review we will concentrate on some of the effects of ethanol in the liver. Ethanol is a well-known hepatotoxic agent and it also increases susceptibility to microbial infections. The liver is in a strategic position to be affected by ethanol intake, both because it is a major site of alcohol metabolism and also because it is the first major organ that encounters the absorbed alcohol via the portal vein.
