Sr 0.5 Ba 0.5 Nb 2 O 6 (SBN50) thin films were prepared by the modified sol-gel process, where the complex solution was spin-coated onto Si(100) or ITO-coated glass substrates and heat-treated at the temperature range of 650∼900°C. Stock solution was synthesized from Sr-acetate, Ba-acetate and Nb-ethoxide using 2-methoxyethanol or acetic acid as solvent and ethylene glycol as complexing agent. It was found that ethylene glycol was the component necessary to increase the long-term stability of the solution against precipitation and to decrease the crystallization temperature to 700°C upon diluting the solution with the properly selected amount of acetic acid and 2-methoxyethanol. The type, amount and mixing order of solvents were proved to influence the crystallization behavior of SBN50 thin films.
