The objective of this study was to identify whether polymorphic variants of TP53 Arg72Pro and MDM2 T309G were associated with increased risk for cervical cancer, either independently or jointly among chinese women. We studied genetic polymorphisms in TP53 and MDM2 genes in a population-based case-control study with 167 cervical cancer cases and 223 controls. An increased risk of cervical cancer associated with the TP53 Arg/Arg (OR, 2.47; 95% CI, 1.25–4.87) or MDM2 GG (OR, 2.15; 95% CI, 1.16–4.01) genotype was observed compared with the TP53 Pro/Pro or MDM2 TT genotype, respectively. Additionally, a joint effect between the TP53 and MDM2 polymorphisms in intensifying cervical cancer risk was detected, with the odds ratio (OR) for the presence of both TP53 Arg/Arg and MDM2 309GG genotypes being 3.43 (95% CI, 1.91–6.19). These findings suggest that TP53 and MDM2 polymorphisms may be genetic determinants for the risk of cervical cancer among chinese women.
