Due to earlier reports on the possibility of a remineralization phenomenon occur ring in caries [Head, 1912], work of a more scientific nature has been carried out over the past 15 years. A number of work ers have used the technique of microhard ness testing whereby hardness measure ments are used to provide a quantitative measure of surface change. In addition, loss of surface tissue is shown by alteration in both the size and shape of previously placed indentations.
