Kolliker2 showed that the arcuate fibers converge temporal to the fovea and almost merge without connection between the upper and lower fiber systems. He believed these systems are anatomically separate and form a raphe, or seam, which extends from the fovea to the periphery of the retina. Michel3 described a series of fibers ex tending from the papilla to the macula and adjacent to the fovea temporally without separation by a raphe. In 1891, Dogiel4 showed similar intermingling of the upper and lower papiUomacular bundles temporal to the fovea. He showed the bundles inter mingle up to three to four mm from the fovea, but more peripherally these bundles are divided by a raphe and resume their radial course three to six mm from the fovea.Affolter5 described a similar circular and vertical course of nerve bundles temporal to the fovea but claimed that in the periphery arcuate fibers cross the horizontal meridian. Vogt6 suggested a similar arrangement and estimated the width of the area of intermin gling temporal to the fovea to be one disc diameter.
