Granular or particulate compositions comprising algae and bacteria are described. The algae-sludge granules are produced by incubating the wastewater system with algae under specific quiescent conditions with illumination. After the algae-sludge granules are provided, it is not necessary to maintain the stopping conditions anymore and it is possible to react with the wastewater under agitation conditions. The methods described include the use of algae-sludge granules to produce biomass, the first generation of algae-sludge granules, the use of algae-sludge granules to improve wastewater, and the use of algae-sludge granules to produce biomass. It is believed that the improvement of wastewater by algae-sludge granules will save energy for wastewater treatment, recover energy in wastewater in the form of biomass, and reduce wastewater treatment carbon footprint.
