Previous studies attempting to define the contribution of various brain structures to the execution of motor movements have tended to describe the deficits obtained following surgical lesions in general clinical terms 1, 3-5. No attempts have been made, to our knowledge, to more exactly quantitate the loss of motor strength following such lesions.An apparatus designed to provide such a quantitation of strength loss should be relatively simple mechanically and should limit the subject to the use of distal musculature insofar as possible, since it is believed that cerebral lesions tend to produce maximal functional loss in relation to distal extremity use. In this paper, an apparatus is described which fulfills the above requirements and which is presently used for the study of motor deficits following a variety of cerebral lesions.
