Herpes simplex infection of the corneal endothelium, or herpes corneae posterior, was first described by Schnyder in 1924. 1 The condition was characterized by a local ized linear vesicular eruption of the endothe lium with each vesicle surrounded by a gray ish ring. These vesicles were optically clear, projected into the anterior chamber and were clearly seen only bv biomicroscopy (fig. i). After this initial report, the condition had a brief period of popularity and then even tually slipped into relative obscurity. Be cause of the lack of recent reports I would like to review the literature, report four re cently encountered cases, the results of viral studies performed on one patient and dis cuss the validity of this diagnosis.
