The descriptions of local "architectonic" variations of structure in the cerebral cortex are of prime interest for any cybernetical interpretation of the cortical wiring. However, most of this literature is unquantitative and based on subjective criteria of pattern perception. The present study shows how measurements of optical density as a function of depth in myelin preparations can be used as an objective criterion for the distinction of areal differences. Moreover, the density of (horizontal) myelinated fibers in different layers can be taken as an indication of the amount of intracortical spread of excitation and thus used to supplement the Golgi picture of the cortex which frequently leaves out just what the myelin picture shows, i.e., the long, myelinated connections. The curves indicate that the average length of horizontal fibers in the so called striae of Baillarger cannot exceed of few hundred microns, while the connections in the lower part of the cortex may be much more important. Photographs of 14 different cortical regions are given and the corresponding densitometric graphs are discussed. A diagram shows the interpretation of the myelinated fiber population in terms of the Golgi picture.
