Microbial infections remain a major challenge to the health care system. With the advent of the AIDS epidemic, various infections which cannot be controlled with antimicrobial agents alone have appeared (1). Other immunocompromised populations such as aged subjects and patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy are also increasing. These immunosuppressed populations, some of whom have concomitant myelosuppression may not respond well to antibiotic therapy and therefore experience increased morbidity and mortality from microbial infections.
