MethodThe subjects were 20 congenitally deaf infants except 2, who were both deafened due to meningitis at 1 year 6 months. Hearing levels of all subjects were diagnosed as being profoundly or completely deaf. They had worn hearing aids and were trained in the nursery school for the deaf, but did not develop auditory/verbal communication. The ages of the subjects were between 2 years and 7 years 4 months at the time of cochlear implantation. Infant characteristics are summarized in table 1. All of them wore the Nucleus device with the SPEAK strategy. In our center, usually only threshold levels are measured to protect the infant from overstimulation during the first mapping, and the comfortable level is set at the ‘stimulus level’of 20–30 above the threshold level. The comfortable level is evaluated, when the infant seems to get used to listening to sounds. The period of comfortable level evaluation varies from one infant to the next, but it was from 1 month to 4 months for most infants. The mother must be included in habilitation, as it is anticipated that the mother’s style of active interaction with the infant, involving the use of ‘motherese’can provide the infant’s motivation for auditory/verbal communication. The mother’s reports on the infant’s speech performance in the home are helpful to the staff and may reflect a new approach of training.
