The acidified vanillin method for determination of plant tannins [from Lotus pedunculatus, L. tenuis, Coronilla varia and Onobrychus viciifolia] was reassessed. Excluding light and controlling the temperature of the reaction mixture increased the color stability of the vanillin tannin adduct. Selection of optimum concentrations of reactants and solvents enabled the method to be used in the range 5-500 .mu.g of condensed tannin with a precision and accuracy of > 1 .mu.g. The presence of tannins was associated with control of bloat, improved protein utilization and reduced digestibility and palatability of the forage of ruminants.
