Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) has previously been used to measure blood flow in human teeth. In the present studs the clinical application of LDF in assessing pulpal vitality in young, injured, permanent teeth was investigated. Flow-metric values determined in 33 incisors with necrotic pulps were distinctly lower than those in non-injured control teeth (ratio 0.13±0.025). Heart beat synchronous oscillations and low frequency fluctuations present in the recording signal from normal teeth were absent in 29 of the 33 non-vital teeth. In 16 luxated teeth with uncertain pulpal diagnosis, normal LDF values obtained initially remained normal throughout the follow-up period. At the end of this period (3-120 weeks), pulpal vitality was confirmed indirectly using traditional clinical observations, including regained response to an electric pulp tester. Thus, LDF can be used to determine pulpal vitality in injured teeth at a stage when conventional clinical findings are inconclusive.
