S LS kkkk in research has been defined as the combination of two or more theories, data sources, methods, or investigators in the study of a single phenomenon (Denzin, 1970). Although this definition is seemingly straightforward, closer scrutiny reveals that the word “combination” can be interpreted in many ways. Idiosyncratic interpreta-tions could lead to difficulties for re-searchers attempting to triangulate and for research consumers questioning whether or not triangulation took place. The lack of specificity and step-by-step procedures for implementing triangulation merits attention. The purpose of this paper is to present operational definitions for the types of triangulation described by Denzin (1989) in an effort to make triangulation clearer and thus more appealing to larger numbers of nurse investigators.
