THE secretions of mucous cells of epithelial surfaces and of their glands, including those in the bronchus, are regarded as glycoprotein in nature and belonging to that group generally known as the epithelial glycoproteins (Gibbons and Mattner, 1966). Epithelial glycoproteins in both man and animals are usually acidic because of their content of sialic acid (Gottschalk, 1960) or sulphate (Gibbons and Mattner) or both sulphate and sialic acid (Kent and Marsden, 1963; Havez et al., 1965).
