The anthracycline antibiotics daunorubicin and doxorubicin, have become major components of current anticancer treatment. Because of their importance recognized upon their introduction into clinical trials in the 1960s, thorough reviews of laboratory and clinical findings have appeared. The proceedings of an International Symposium on Adriamycin held in Milan, Italy, 1971 were published summarizing early findings [1]. Subsequently, as the therapeutic impact as well as the limitations of the two parent compounds became appreciated, an extensive search for other anthracycline derivatives was carried out in pharmaceutical enterprises throughout various countries including France, Italy, Japan, the Soviet Union, and the United States. These new research trends have been the subject of more recent reviews [2], and also conferences and symposia published as volumes [3, 4].
