Discusses vertebrate motion detectors developed throughout phylogeny, focusing on the labyrinth, the optokinetic system of visual processing, and the extraocular muscle motor control system. From sensor to effector, these systems provide temporally and spatially coordinated compensatory eye movements. The vestibulo-ocular reflex exemplifies sensory-motor transformations in 3-dimensional space and allows conclusions to be drawn about functional, phylogenetic, and teleological aspects of brain function. The peripheral mechanisms used to simplify central operations are indicated by the uniformity of the vestibulo-oculomotor system in regard to its peripheral spatial organization. The central nervous system (CNS) workload is decreased in favor of animal economy or higher-order operations such as learning.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
