The present study quantifies and characterizes the sweating responses of a hyperhidrotic patient (HHP) and control subject (CS) during various emotional interventions and during cycle ergometer exercise. The most striking observations were related to the HHP. This subject showed (a) excessive sweat production on the general body surface in response to emotional Stimuli and (b) a distinct absence of palmar sweating throughout all interventions. His right forearm sweating averaged 0·43 mg cm−2min−1during emotional Interventions, whereas the CS did not sweat on the general body surface under these conditions. Completion of State‐Trait Anxiety Inventory self‐evaluation Questionnaires, following the emotional Interventions, revealed mean scores of 50 and 27 for the HHP and Cs, Respectively, clearly documenting the increased anxiety of the HHP. Cycle ergometer exercise elevated heart rate to 160 bpm and elicited an expected sweating response in both subjects. We conclude that the HHP in this study suffers from systemic hyperhidrosis associated with emotional stimuli.
