The authors investigated the question of why thick glass membranes have given incorrect values for the pH of solutions. The deviation from the theoretical value is proportional to the resistance of the membrane for a given supporting tube unless certain precautions are observed. The resistance ratio of immersed glass to non-immersed glass just above the line of immersion should be as small as possible. If equal wetted areas are used on both inside and outside the membrane and supporting tube the resistance effect is largely overcome. A hygroscopic film above the line of immersion is found to give rise to the deviations. The Na ion effect for Na glasses is small between pH 3.97 and 12.55. The use of coatings of paraffin, asphalt and other materials is described.
