The electrical characteristics of the electric tissue of Eletrophorus were studied by laying the fish in dry wooden troughs and placing Al electrodes leading from varying positions on the skin adjacent to the electric organs to a cathode-ray oscillograph. The highest voltage measured was 550 volts. The voltage of main organs increased with interelectrodal distances at an avg. of 8 volts/cm. to a maximum at about 50 cm. At the anterior end where the number of electroplax layers is greatest, the voltage/cm. is also greatest. It decreases caudally as the electroplax layers thicken. Measurements for the following are given and discussed; the e.m.f. / cm., the charge passing through 1 cm.2 of electroplax layer, and the total electrical energy produced in 1 impulse in cm.3 of electrical tissue.
