RESULTSThe results of the analysis of the cases on steroid therapy are given in Table I. It will be seen that 11 out of the total series of 38 cases had a complication of wound healing, an incidence of 29 per cent. Three of the II had a complete wound disruption (burst abdomen), 4 had a partial disruption of the superficial part of the wound requiring resuture, and 4 had prolonged discharge from the wound. Two of this last group eventually developed an incisional hernia, indicating that in these 2 cases some disruption of the deeper tissues of the wound had occurred. The cases were divided into two groups, in an attempt to compare those who had had long-term steroid therapy preoperatively (marked* in Table I) and those who had had short-term steroid therapy. A period of one week or longer was chosen to indicate long-term steroid therapy; there were 29 patients in this group and 8 showed wound complications (28 per cent). Nine patients received steroids for less than one week and 3 had wound complications (33 per cent).
