To determine the cause of panic in free range laying hens, two consecutive flocks of 6000 free-range birds on a commercial unit were studied between June 2009 and July 2011. Birds were housed in four identical, self contained pens (1500 birds/pen). Each pen was filmed for 24 hours using CCTV equipment. Results after observing the flocks showed 115 panics observed across two consecutive laying cycles; 15% of panics were classed as 'Whole flock' and 85% were localised with only a few birds affected. The highest number of panics were observed at 25 weeks of age, decreasing rapidly with age. The majority of panics were observed on the litter or outside. 88% of the panic were of unknown origin. 12 percent were provoked by stockmen carrying out unusual or unfamiliar behaviours, other than the routine walk through and egg collection.
