In 1963, Liley reported the first infant to be saved from dying in utero by the use of intrauterine transfusions." The fetus was at risk because of Rh-erythroblastosis fetalis. Liley placed paper clips on the maternal abdomen to mark the area corresponding to the fetal peritoneal cavity as determined roentgenographically by swallowed radiopaque amniotic fluid. A Tuohy needle was inserted into the fetal peritoneal cavity, a polyethylene catheter threaded in, and the needle withdrawn. After x-rays confirmed the correct placement of the catheter, Rhnegative packed red cells were transfused into the fetal peritoneal cavity, and fetal therapy was born.
