Main bearing failure can become a major contributor to operation and maintenance expenses due to costs associated with crane, labor, and production loss. Data available in the literature indicates that main bearing failure can be observed much earlier than design lives (by a factor of 4) and root cause analysis indicate problems associated with loads, exposure to harsh environment, inadequate maintenance, and problems with mass production (bad batch of materials) can lead to very reduced useful life. Modeling main bearing reliability is important but definitely very challenging. This paper is focused on understanding the predictive capabilities of a fatigue damage accumulation model as applied to main bearings in three-point mount wind turbines. The results demonstrate that fatigue life can significantly contribute to bearing failures, especially under lubrication contamination. We also showed that turbine-specific reliability can be improved by proper maintenance (full regreasing).
