A report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer states that about 2· 9 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in Europe each year. 1 Clearly, cancer remains a major public-health problem, and the contributors to the report speculated about interventions that may reduce the effect of this disease across Europe. However, estimates of frequency, and the ability to monitor the effect of interventions, depend crucially on the continual availability of robust data.
