1.1 BackgroundMidblock crosswalks are the crossing points for pedestrians present at locations other than intersections (Figure 1). They are usually installed in areas having high pedestrian demand. Based on control strategy and geometric design they can be classified into the following types: signalized single stage, signalized two stage, unsignalized single stage and unsignalized two stage, in addition to several other types. The type of midblock crosswalk required should be appropriately selected considering effectiveness and safety.Delay is an important measure of effectiveness for pedestrian crossings. This measure is also important for safety, since higher delays to pedestrians raise discomfort and might urge them to violate signals1). Both vehicle and pedestrian delays need to be considered while choosing a crosswalk type.
