It is suggested that a single primitive myo-globin-like haem protein is the evolutionary forerunner of the different types of peptide chains in present-day vertebrate haemoglobins. A scheme for the evolution of the human haemoglobin genes, which may be of general application, is outlined. Increase in the number of haemoglobin genes has presumably come about by repeated gene duplication and trans-locations.
