is an anomaly which is rare but of interest for several reasons. Since the angiographic appearances are unfamiliar, they are liable to be misinterpreted. Further, the diagnosis is of practical importance since, while hypoplasia of the internal carotid artery may be only an incidental autopsy finding, the condition may become apparent at the time of a hemorrhagic or ischemic cerebrovascular accident. A number of these vascular accidents are related to associated intracranial vascular anomalies which should be recognized. Finally, the cause of the carotid hypoplasia is uncertain. For these reasons and, because of the scanty literature available on the subject, we report the following case, including autopsy findings, in which hypoplasia of the left internal carotid artery was discovered at the time of a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
