AbstractThis review of the chemistry and electrochemistry of the Hall-Heroult process discusses the composition and constitution of the electrolyte, phenomena occurring at the anode and cathode, the chemical behaviour of the carbon cell-lining, the mechanism of the loss of Faradaic efficiency, and matters of current concern from the environmental point of view. Resume Cette revue de la chimie et de l'electrochimie du procede Hall-Heroult discute de la composition et de la constitution de l'electrolyte, des phenomenes anodiques et cathodiques, du comportement chimique du revetement des cuves, du mecanisme de la perte de rendement Faradaique, ainsi que de quelques sujets d'interet environmental.
