The surface effect leads to unacceptable errors in neutron strain scanning measurements close to interfaces. The divergence and wavelength distribution in the primary beam from a monochromatic neutron source are mostly responsible for these huge errors. By using a radial collimator for the definition of the primary beam cross section a homogeneous beam can be produced which reduces the surface-effect drastically.
