The plutonium-gallium equilibrium diagram has been constructed from the results of thermal, dilatometric, micrographic and X-ray diffraction studies. The maximum solubilities of gallium in δ- and ε-plutonium are about 12.5 and 20 at %, respectively. The δ phase is stabilized to room temperature by the solution of 2 or more at % gallium. Six intermediate phases, namely, Pu3Ga (ζ'), Pu5Ga3, PuGa, Pu2Ga3(?), PuGa2and PuGa3(μ'), are stable at room temperature, and 3 phases, namely, Pu3Ga (ζ), PuGa3(μ) and η are stable at elevated temperatures. The η solid solution exists from about 18 to 42 at % gallium, depending on temperature.
