Toxicity of methoprene, a juvenile hormone analog, toDrosophila melanogaster(Meigen) was inversely proportional to culture density when incorporated into the larva diet. Since many different wild-type strains showed this density-dependent toxicity, the effect appears to be independent of genotype. Experiments suggest that diet-incorporated methoprene is degraded by feeding larvae, possibly by an enzyme in the saliva or frass. These results indicate that insect density must be considered as a variable when estimating the toxicity of methoprene in the laboratory as well as when considering control of dipteran stable pests by incorporation of methoprene into livestock dung.
