The other main issue discussed at that meeting had to do with the rapid development of tuna farming in the Mediterranean. Given a series of concerns that have been expressed in relation to this practice, the joint Working Group meeting developed a list of probable and/or possible impacts of farming on aspects such as the collection of data, management, and impacts on the environment. Dr. Restrepo explained that the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the GFCM had met recently and had reviewed the list of probable or possible impacts mentioned above, and had decided to create an inter-disciplinary working Group to develop practical guidelines for sustainable tuna farming. ICCAT scientists are encouraged to take part in this working Group.
