I should like to make a retrospective survey of thc last dozcn years or so, and speak about the influence of calculating machines and mathematical tables on our attitude towards computing. My main point will be that many processes and operations that were formerly faced with great trepidation have now lost their terrors, and can be taken in our stridc. It is my task to point out some of the ways in which this change in our mental attitude has been brought about. If I should appear to dwell unduly on things that I have donc myself, I must ask for your leniency and plead in excuse that I have devoted a great deal of my life to establishing computing as a recognised art, and to removing its stings.
