These are the lecture notes of a minicourse on the interplay between forc- ing theory and combinatorial properties of the real line, held at Universi- dad de los Andes (Bogota) from January 29 till February 4, 2009 (first five lectures). The sixth lecture was done at Universidad Nacional (Bogota) on February 9, and repeated at Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cient´ ificas (Caracas) on February 19. Basic knowledge of forcing the- ory and iterated forcing, as expounded in (Ku1, Chapters VII and VIII) and (Je, Sections 14 to 16), were a prerequisite for the course.
