In the 24 mm specimen described by the author there are only two ossifications in the neural cranium, the sphenoid and the occipital. The 9.6 mm specimen shows none. Incipient perichondral ossification shows only in the splanchnocranium. Typical of Polypterus is, the constant number of sense organs in the sensory canals, whereas the number of neuromasts in the pit line system varies somewhat. In none of the four larval stages described in this article is there any indication of the forming of the future sensory canals. The sense organs are still lying quite superficially, and no difference in size or structure between the future canal organs and the pit line organs can be discerned.
