The objective in this chapter is to describe and analyze the ambition to strengthen the interregional trade relation between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in times of an ongoing re-polarization of the global economic arena. This endeavor should be seen in the light of the EU’s attempts to maintain its position in international trade. Its previously strong role has been challenged by the rapid growth of East Asia in the global economy, particularly at a time when the multilateral negotiations within the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its Doha Development Agenda (DDA) have shown very poor progress, and the world has faced the deepest economic downturn since the early 1930s, caused by the economic and financial crisis in 2008–2009.This limited progress at the multilateral level has contributed to the FTA trend that took off in the 1990s. The number of bilateral and regional FTAs (BTAs and RTAs) has increased rapidly during the last two decades. As of mid-2011, around 300 trade agreements were in force. 1 The issue whether such agreements should be seen as purely negative to the attempts to further liberalize international trade, or
