During the last 20 years both the pharmaceutical industry and the regulatory authorities established by governments to safeguard the interests of the public have striven to minimize the risks to patients initially exposed to and subsequently treated with new drugs.The object of this presentation is two-fold. First, to cover those parts of a typical drug development programme most affected by initiatives designed to minimize risk. Second, to present certain data to quantify the effects of some of these initiatives on the pharmaceutical industry.
